Silicon Valley, one of the worst professional sites for women

The cradle of technology accumulates complaints and demands for abuse of power in front of women

Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or Uber are companies based in Silicon Valley (United States) and they share cases of gender discrimination. According to data from Facebook itself, 69% of its workforce is composed of men. A data that maintains a similar proportion in the rest of leading technology.

The last public denunciation of machismo in the main technological core of the world is signed by the engineer Susan Fowler and splashes Uber. The former employee of the transport services company explains her time at the company.

“On my first official day on the team, my new manager sent me a series of messages via company chat, he was in an open relationship, he said, and his girlfriend was having an easy time finding new friends. I was trying to get him to have sex with him, and I was so clearly out of line that I immediately took pictures of these chat messages and informed the human resources, “Fowler denounces in his blog.

The response from Uber’s CEO, Travis Kalanick, was swift. “What is written here is aberrant and goes against everything we believe in. Anyone who behaves or thinks like that will be fired,” he says on Twitter.

The previous lawsuit came to Keliner Perkins and signed by Ellen Pao, which has finally been resolved in favor of the California-based venture capital firm. These cases have served Elefant in the Valley to conduct a survey of more than 200 women working in Silicon Valley.

The majority of respondents were women with children, over forty years old and with important positions in their respective companies. According to this study, nine out of ten respondents had witnessed sexist behavior and about 87% had heard degrading comments.

Technology against wage gap

The presence of women in the world of work is increasing, although as the scale of responsibility increases, the percentage of employment falls to 10%. The data from FEDEA are clear, of the 22.8 million people active in Spain, more than 10.6 million are women. However, the female unemployment rate reaches 20%, three percentage points above the figure for men, according to the INE.

Analysts bet on the scope of parity in the world of work in 2030, although different studies, especially the Davos report, distance that possibility. The arrival of technology will bring about the destruction of seven million jobs by 2020.

The 4.0 revolution will cause changes in the way of working and will implement automation in several sectors. For the experts from Davos, the administration will suffer this new stage, where women have a greater presence.

However, the technology will create two million trades, all of them related to scientific, mathematical or engineering skills; the so-called STEM races. “The professions will be increasingly linked with the technologies”, says EFE in an interview with Núria Castell, dean of the faculty of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

According to data from the Ministry of Education, the Spanish university population is composed of 54% women, but they only occupy 25% of technical career positions and 10% in ICT engineering. These figures are also worrying in Brussels. The European Center for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) emphasizes that for the next decade the demand for profiles linked to STEM will reach 14%.
